As I stood in the line of ESLI graduates in 2007, looking out over the next four years of my life at an American university, I realized that I was at the end of the first phase of my dream to be a writer. I am a Theater Arts major at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, studying to be a dramatist, a playwright. This is a big challenge for me as I'm Chinese. I spoke one language for almost twenty years. The way I think and the way I speak is that of the Chinese. I wanted to learn about American culture and the best way is to speak English and make American friends. I must improve my vocabulary, and reading helps me to do that. I want to be the pride and joy of my parents, to make both my dreams and theirs come true. ESLI has helped me to do that.

My education in ESLI has helped me in many ways. I studied English for seven years at a private high school in Istanbul, but when I came to Corpus Christi I found that I had forgotten most of it in the five years since graduation. ESLI has definitely helped me to recall what I learned before and actually improved my comprehension and writing skills. More than that, the program has helped me to prepare for a university education, personally and mentally. While at ESLI, I have adapted to my new environment, practiced how to plan my day, and made close friends, which I am sure will help me to do very well in the university. I advise anyone who wants to improve his skills in writing and comprehension before entering the university to attend ESLI.
